The whispers of AI taking over the job market have created a sense of unease, particularly among young tech professionals. However, a closer look reveals a different story. Contrary to popular
fears, the demand for skilled AI professionals is experiencing a surge. Companies across various sectors are actively seeking individuals with the necessary expertise to develop intuitive solutions and leverage the power of AI for growth.

Experts from leading tech companies like Indeed and Samsung offer valuable insights on the skills and attributes one needs to cultivate to thrive in this evolving landscape.

Sashi Kumar, Head of Sales at Indeed India, emphasizes the growing demand for AI talent: “We’re witnessing a significant rise in the number of AI jobs. Focusing on skills relevant to the field is crucial, while concerns about AI’s impact on jobs can be addressed later.” He highlights the booming demand for AI engineers driven by the constant need for companies to create user-friendly and intelligent solutions.

Anita Christopher, Talent Development Head at Samsung Semiconductor India Research, paints a vivid picture of the future: “We’re stepping into an era of hyper intelligence, pervasive sensors, and interconnectedness. AI has the potential to become a valuable collaborator, assisting us in various aspects of our lives.”

Building a Strong Foundation: Technical Skills for the AI Path

The specific technical skillset required depends heavily on the chosen area of specialization within the vast field of AI. However, some core programming languages consistently appear across job postings, according to Kumar. These include Python, Java, JavaScript, and SQL. Mastering these languages forms a strong foundation for further exploration within the domain.

Going beyond the basics, understanding of machine learning algorithms, deep learning, neural networks, big data analytics, and related concepts becomes crucial for individuals seeking a career in AI. These specialized areas form the backbone of AI development and require dedicated learning and practice.

Soft Skills: The Power of Growth and Collaboration

While technical skills are essential, experts like Christopher emphasize the equal importance of soft skills in today’s fast-paced environment. “Technical skills can be acquired or enhanced over time,” she says. “But attitudes towards learning, problem-solving, critical thinking, and a growth mindset are harder to develop later.” Cultivating these soft skills is essential for adaptivity and success in a dynamic field like AI.

Growth mindset, in particular, has gained significant traction, notes Kumar. “Indeed’s job postings over the past two years show a 150% increase in the use of the term ‘growth mindset’. This mindset emphasizes the belief that skills and talent can be developed through diligence, strategic planning, and guidance. It’s not just about possessing skills, but also about the ability to continuously learn and adapt.”

Creativity is another vital soft skill increasingly sought after in the AI landscape. Kumar points out a 70% rise in the use of the word ‘creativity’ in job postings. This underscores the need for individuals who can approach problems with innovative thinking and contribute to the development of solutions that are not just technically sound but also address real-world needs in creative ways.

Getting Your Foot in the Door: Certification and Beyond

For new graduates or individuals transitioning to the field of AI, certification courses can be a valuable stepping stone. Kumar acknowledges the role of certifications: “Certificates offer a tangible demonstration of skill and proficiency, particularly for individuals with limited work experience.” However, he emphasizes that certifications should not be seen as a substitute for gaining practical experience.

The journey to a fulfilling career in AI requires a multi-pronged approach. Cultivating a strong foundation in technical skills, coupled with a growth mindset, creative thinking, and other essential soft skills, sets individuals up for success. Beyond formal education and certifications, actively seeking practical experience through project work, internships, or freelance opportunities can further enhance one’s skills and knowledge.

By embracing a continuous learning mindset and actively seeking opportunities to develop both technical and soft skills, individuals can navigate the exciting frontier of AI and build fulfilling and impactful careers in this transformative field.
