Defying a Hurriyat diktat for closure of schools in the valley as part of a five month long protest, the Delhi Public School management here on Thursday announced the re-opening of school from Saturday. The Valley also witnessed the end of board exams despite militant threats of disruption.
All schools, colleges and educational institutions in Kashmir, including universities, have been shut since July 9 following the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani in an encounter.
Anti-social elements burned down more than 30 schools across the valley in this period and also tried to set ablaze S P College, which is Srinagar’s oldest college. Authorities, however, successfully held class 10 and 12 Board exams in face of separatists and hoodlums who threw stones at students at several places in the last two weeks.
Chairman of J&K school board of education, Zahoor Ahmad Chatt, said that out of 32,044 students, 30,292 students appeared in class 12 exams -nearly 94.53% of the total examinees. Nearly 98% students appeared in class 10 board exams.
DPS, Srinagar, announced resumption of regular classes from Saturday , December 3, from nine am to three pm on all days. Buses will run only from designated spots as mentioned on the school website, a statement said. Uniforms are not a must.However, student must carry their I-cards for security reasons, the statement said.
Interestingly , the granddaughter of top separatist Syed Ali Shah Geelani and daughters of separatist Shabir Shah had appeared in the internal exams of DPS.
