Hurriyat (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani Monday appealed the United Nations Secretary General to appoint a special envoy on Kashmir and persuade both India and Pakistan to initiate a process with which the United Nations as well as the genuine leadership of the people of Jammu & Kashmir will be associated so as to ensure the permanent settlement of this long pending dispute which will be based on the principles of justice.
Spokesman of Hurriyat (G) in a statement said that Geelani in a letter to Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon on the occasion of million march going on in America, expressed the hope that the way this international institution is taking leadership roles in various trouble spots of the world, the people of Kashmir believe that this world body will also take steps in the implementation of those resolutions which has been passed by it with regarding to the right to self determination of the Kashmiri people. While expressing his profound gratitude to Ban Ki-Moon for proposing his intervention in the resolution of the Kashmir dispute, Geelani said that the time has come that United Nations will use its good office in the resolution of this long pending dispute.
While complaining of the inactiveness and duel standards of the world powers, the Kashmiri pro-freedom leader said that Kashmir issue is one of the oldest unresolved international problems in the world which is waiting for the permanent solution and due to which the millions of human beings of this region are miserably suffering.
Hurriyat (G) Chairman reminded that when the Kashmir dispute erupted in 1947-1948, the United Nations adopted the stand that the future status of Kashmir must be ascertained in accordance with the wishes and aspirations of the people of the territory. All the world powers, including United States, Great Britain and France were sponsors of the resolution # 47 which was adopted by the Security Council on 21 April 1948 and which was based on that unchallenged principle.
Geelani said that the Security Council resolutions on Kashmir are not in the routine sense of the term but their provisions were negotiated in detail by the United Nations with India and Pakistan and it was only after the consent of both Governments was explicitly obtained that they were endorsed by the Security Council. Thus it is such a binding and solemn international agreement which is necessary to implement. Geelani in his letter wrote that the unresolved Kashmir dispute caused two wars in the not-so-remote past between India and Pakistan and possibly to yet another war, with incalculable consequences for the whole world, since both states now are nuclear powers.
Geelani said that no secessionist or separatist movement is going on in Kashmir but it is a genuine struggle against the foreign occupation. Against that foreign occupation whose end was assured by the United Nations.
While giving reference of 2008 and 2010 mass uprising, Geelani wrote that these reports are deeply stirred that the entire adult population of major towns in Jammu & Kashmir, at times, more than a million people coming out in the streets with their demand for a speedy implementation of that agreement which was passed by the UNO with India and Pakistan in chair. Kashmiri people demand that they be allowed to decide their future through an unrigged and un-coerced vote under impartial auspices. Geelani said that the Kashmiri people are voluntarily expressing their resentment against the indifference of the world powers that they are not fulfilling their responsibility with regarding to the Kashmir and due to which the millions of people of this region are miserably suffering.
Geelani appealed the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon to appoint a special envoy on Kashmir, a person of international standing, like President Mary Robinson, Nobel Laureates, Mr. Kofi Annan and Bishop Desmond Tutu so that the India and Pakistan can be persuaded to initiate a peace process with which the genuine leadership of the people of Jammu & Kashmir will be associated to find a peaceful, durable and permanent resolution to the Kashmir dispute with the help of United Nations.
