Building material dots roadsides despite ban

Leads to traffic chaos & poses threat to commuters as MC fails to enforce ban imposed by it

Building material dots roadsides despite banThe open violation of an order of the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) against dumping of construction material on roads is being overlooked by the JMC. The building material being dumped on the roadside is not only creating traffic chaos, but may cause accidents as well.

The JMC, which has directed builders and property owners not to place construction material on the roadside, is itself is paying no heed to check the continuous violations.

At most of the localities, the building material can be seen lying on the roadside and the JMC seems to turn a blind eye to it.

“People are openly dumping building material and garbage on the roadside for weeks together, but there is no check by the authorities. The problem exists in posh localities and near government buildings as well,” said Rajeev Gupta, a resident of Nai Basti.

“The authorities have virtually accepted the practice of placing building material on the roadside by builders and residents as no action is being taken,” he added.

The residents complain that the JMC hardly takes their telephone calls for complaint and no action is taken even after complaint is lodged. Apart from being an eyesore, the material spread on roads poses as a threat to commuters.

“While travelling from the last turn in Gandhi Nagar to Gurdwara Sahib, every day I witness heaps of construction material such as sand dumped on roads. This may cause accidents anytime,” said Gurpreet Singh, a resident of Gandhi Nagar.

“This locality has many ministers and bureaucrats. I wonder how they allow violation of norms,” he said.

During the rainy season, building material is dumped in water channels, leading to floods in low-lying areas. Despite repeated attempts, Mandeep Kour, Commissioner, JMC, was not available for comment.
