The Meteorological Department (MeT) has forecasted light to moderate rainfall at many places in Jammu and Kashmir over the next two days, from June 2 to June 3, with scattered thunderstorms, gusty winds, and brief spells of rain expected particularly in the afternoons.

The weather update comes as the region experienced unseasonal cold conditions for the second consecutive day, driven by persistent rainfall and fresh snowfall in the higher reaches.

Cold Snap Continues: Kashmir Records Below-Normal Temperatures Again

After four days of continuous rainfall and mountain snow, major tourist destinations and urban centres in Kashmir are reporting sharp temperature drops:

  • Srinagar: 19.5°C ( 7.5°C below normal)

  • Gulmarg: 7.6°C ( 9.9°C below normal)

  • Pahalgam: 16.1°C ( 6.9°C below normal)

  • Jammu: 35.5°C ( 3.5°C below normal)

According to the daily weather bulletin, Kashmir witnessed light to moderate rain and snowfall in upper reaches during the past 24 hours, with the following recorded precipitation:

  • Pahalgam: 36.8 mm

  • Banihal: 34.3 mm

  • Baramulla: Gusty winds at 31 km/h

  • Jammu: Winds up to 54 km/h

  • Kathua: Winds peaked at 64 km/h

Weather Outlook for June 2–3: Cloudy Skies, Thunderstorms, and Showers

The MeT office predicts that weather will remain partly to generally cloudy across the Valley on June 2 and June 3, with brief spells of rain, thundershowers, and gusty winds in the afternoon hours.

Thunderstorm and Lightning Alert: “There is a possibility of thunder/lightning and gusty winds during the late afternoon hours of June 2. People are advised to remain indoors during intense weather and stay away from loose structures, electric poles, overhead cables, and old trees,” the MeT department cautioned.

Weather Forecast June 4–6: Gradual Improvement with Isolated Rain

Looking ahead, the forecast for June 4 to June 6 indicates generally dry weather conditions in most parts of Jammu and Kashmir. However, isolated rain showers or light thundershowers may still occur during late afternoons.

Impact on Travel & Tourism: A Mixed Bag

The spell of rain and snow has added charm to popular destinations like Gulmarg and Sonamarg, attracting tourists to the fresh snow-covered vistas. However, travelers are advised caution due to wet roads, slippery slopes, and occasional gusty winds. Outdoor adventure activities may be impacted in higher altitudes.
