Mufti Condemns ‘Unjust’ Crackdown in Pahalgam, Calls for Fair Treatment of Locals
Pahalgam, May 6, 2025 – Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti visited Pahalgam on Monday, meeting with locals and condemning what she described as an “unjust crackdown” following the April 22 terror attack that claimed 26 lives.
Mufti’s Concerns Over Civilian Detentions
During her visit, Mufti interacted with residents and tourists, praising the bravery of locals who risked their lives to protect visitors during the attack. However, she strongly criticized the security agencies’ handling of the aftermath, alleging that innocent civilians, including shawl vendors, ponywalas, and tea sellers, were being detained or questioned without cause.
Mufti warned that mass detentions and blanket criminalization of locals could breed resentment and mistrust, urging authorities to conduct fair investigations rather than resorting to collective punishment.
Call for Financial Assistance & Tourism Support
With the Amarnath Yatra set to begin in July, Mufti urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to provide financial relief to Ponywalas, hoteliers, taxi operators, and other tourism-dependent workers who have suffered due to instability and the ongoing crackdown. She also called for waiving interest on loans taken by tourism stakeholders to help them recover economically.
Political & Social Reactions
Mufti’s remarks have sparked debate over security measures in Kashmir, with some supporting her call for justice and fair treatment, while others argue that strong security measures are necessary to prevent further violence.
As tensions remain high, Mufti’s visit has reignited discussions on civil rights, security policies, and the future of Kashmir’s tourism industry.
