Picnic Turns Tragic: Two College Students Dead, 21 Injured in Kashmir Bus Accident

College Trip Turns Fatal: Two Students Dead, Over 20 Injured in Kashmir Accident

Handwara 12 April 2025: In a heartbreaking incident on Saturday, a bus carrying 27 students from Government Degree College Sogam overturned near Vodpora village in Handwara, Kupwara district, Jammu and Kashmir. The students were on their way to a picnic when the driver lost control of the vehicle, leading to the tragic accident.

Two students lost their lives in the mishap. One was declared dead upon arrival at Handwara hospital, while the other succumbed to injuries at Shri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) Hospital in Srinagar. Among the 21 injured, two remain in critical condition, while others are receiving treatment at Handwara hospital.

The accident has sent shockwaves through the community, with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressing their grief. The government has announced an ex gratia of ₹1 lakh for the families of the deceased and financial aid for the injured. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered to determine the cause of the accident.

Local residents were among the first responders, rushing to the scene to help the injured students. The tragic event has reignited discussions about the safety measures required during educational outings and public travel. The loss of two young lives has left the community mourning and calling for stricter regulations to prevent such incidents in the future.
