J&K Governance in Crossfire: LG Asserts Authority Amid Transfer Controversy

Amid row over transfers, J&K LG says ‘fully aware of my jurisdiction’

Srinagar 04 April 2025: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has firmly addressed the controversy surrounding the recent transfer of 48 Jammu and Kashmir Administrative Service (JKAS) officers, stating that he is “fully aware of my jurisdiction” and has acted strictly within the framework of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019. This statement comes amidst criticism from the National Conference and its allies, who view the transfers as an overreach and a challenge to the authority of the elected government.

The Lieutenant Governor emphasized that his actions align with the constitutional provisions, particularly those granting him authority over matters related to law and order. He reassured that he has never breached his jurisdiction and has no intention of doing so in the future.

This development has added to the ongoing tensions between the Raj Bhavan and the Omar Abdullah-led government, which has called for mutual respect and cooperation while condemning what it perceives as an infringement on democratic norms.

The statement comes in response to the backlash following a series of transfers

“I want to make it absolutely clear — the Parliament passed the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act in 2019, and I have acted entirely within the domain defined by that Act,” Sinha said according to Kashmir Dot Com, addressing concerns raised by political parties and alliance members.

He further said that he has never overstepped his constitutional boundaries and assured that he would never do so in the future. “I am fully aware of my jurisdiction and responsibilities. I have never violated them, nor will I ever do so,” the LG added.
