High Court Directions Ignored: Ruhullah Criticizes Verification Practices

Ruhullah Mehdi Criticizes ‘Weaponized’ Verification in Kashmir

Srinagar, April 3, 2025
– National Conference MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi has strongly condemned what he termed a “verification regime” in Jammu and Kashmir, alleging that it is being used as a tool of oppression against families of individuals accused of militancy. Speaking in Parliament, Ruhullah accused the authorities of systematically denying job verifications, passport clearances, government contracts, and business approvals to innocent people under the pretext of security clearances.

Allegations of Collective Punishment

Ruhullah highlighted the plight of families subjected to harassment due to the alleged actions of their relatives. “If an individual is found involved in militant activity, their entire family and extended relatives are punished,” he stated. He emphasized that such practices violate constitutional principles and the rule of law. “No one should be punished for someone else’s actions,” he added.

Appeal to the Government

The MP revealed that he had raised the issue with the Home Ministry but had received no response. Expressing frustration over the lack of accountability, Ruhullah urged the government to intervene and ensure justice. “Even the High Court has issued directions on this matter. The law must be followed, and justice must be ensured,” he asserted.

Public and Political Reactions

Ruhullah’s remarks have sparked discussions about the balance between security measures and individual rights in Jammu and Kashmir. Critics argue that the verification process disproportionately affects innocent families and undermines trust in governance. Supporters of the policy, however, maintain that stringent measures are necessary to ensure security in the region.
