Mehbooba Mufti Warns Against Division: ‘Pitting Hindus and Muslims Will Have Dangerous Consequences’

Mehbooba Mufti Warns Against Divisive Politics, Cites Dangerous Consequences

Srinagar, March 13
: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has issued a stark warning about the dangers of pitting Hindus and Muslims against each other. Reacting to controversies surrounding Holi celebrations coinciding with Friday prayers during Ramadhan, Mufti emphasized that such divisive politics could have long-term repercussions for the country.

“A Poisonous Atmosphere”

Speaking to reporters in Shopian, Mufti lamented the deteriorating communal harmony in India. “The atmosphere across the country is being vitiated. Earlier, Holi was celebrated together by Hindus and Muslims, just like Eid. Now, poison is being spread,” she said.

Mufti specifically criticized Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, accusing him of fostering division. “The attitude towards Muslims is totally wrong. Hindus and Muslims used to live happily, but now efforts are being made to pit them against each other,” she added.

Drawing Parallels with Pakistan

Mufti drew a parallel between the current situation in India and the communal tensions created during the rule of Pakistan’s former president Zia-ul-Haq. “Zia-ul-Haq created a similar atmosphere in Pakistan, and the country is still grappling with its consequences. The same poison is being sown here, and its impact will be dangerous for the country in the times to come,” she warned.

A Call for Harmony

Expressing hope for better sense to prevail, Mufti urged people to respect each other’s traditions. “Holi is a good festival, and everybody enjoys it. Let Hindus play Holi, and let Muslims offer prayers on Friday,” she said.

She also accused the BJP leadership of using divisive tactics to distract from governance failures. “They cannot give anything to the people in Uttar Pradesh, so they try to keep the pot simmering by unleashing atrocities on the Muslim community,” she alleged.

A Plea for Unity

Mufti’s remarks come at a time when communal tensions have been on the rise, with controversies over religious festivals and practices becoming flashpoints. Her call for unity and mutual respect underscores the need for dialogue and understanding in a diverse country like India.
