Thousands offer special prayers to seek an end to dry spell in Kashmir
An unprecedented heatwave has gripped Kashmir, troubling people, disrupting daily life and impacting the horticulture and agriculture sectors.
In view of the dire situation, people across Kashmir have begun offering special prayers for early rains. Srinagar recorded its third-highest temperature ever at 36.2°C today, with temperatures continuing to soar across the region.
The prolonged dry spell and intense heat have led to significant challenges for farmers and horticulturists. Crops are wilting under the scorching sun, and irrigation systems are under immense pressure.
The horticulture sector, a vital part of Kashmir’s economy, is particularly affected, with fruit orchards suffering from lack of adequate water and heat stress.
Farmers are reporting reduced yields and concerns over the quality of produce. “The heat is unbearable, and our crops are suffering. We desperately need rain,” said Ghulam Ahmed, a farmer from the Anantnag district.
“If this continues, it will be disastrous for our livelihoods.”
At several places worshippers were seen seeking divine intervention to end the heatwave and bring much-needed relief. “We are praying for mercy from Allah. The heatwave is making our lives difficult, and our crops are in danger,” said Mohammad Yousuf, a resident of Srinagar.
People in Chaar-e-Shareef were seen moving bare foot while praying for rain as Kashmir has witnessed complete dry weather in the last two months.
