Skyrocketing Airfares to Srinagar a Cause for Concern
Airfares from Delhi to Srinagar are more expensive than to Dubai or Bangkok, despite concerns from a parliamentary standing committee.
The committee had previously taken airlines to task for charging exorbitant prices for tickets on certain routes. It had directed airlines to end this practice.
However, airfares have continued to rise, particularly since Go First airline halted its operations.

Tourism stakeholders say that airlines were already hiking airfares, and that the Go First shutdown gave them an excuse to raise prices even further, citing a lack of flights.
If the situation continues, it could have a negative impact on the tourism sector. Last year, Jammu and Kashmir saw a record 1.88 crore visitors. This year, the government is expecting two crore tourists. However, if airfares remain high, this number could be affected.
The high airfares are not just affecting tourists. Businesspeople, patients, students, and frequent travelers are also being impacted. The government must take up this issue with the relevant authorities and find a solution as soon as possible.
The parliamentary standing committee should also continue to pursue this matter, as it is clear that passengers are not being treated fairly.
In its recent report, the committee said that the high airfares imposed by some airlines in the domestic sector, as well as the tactics employed in costing, were misleading the public and pushing consumers to pay more.
The committee also highlighted the fact that even after all the tickets have been sold, the same number of seats are still shown on the website. This indicates that airlines are misleading the public and forcing passengers to pay more.

The committee has called on the government to take action against airlines that are engaging in these practices. It has also asked the government to ensure that airfares are fair and reasonable.
The government must take the committee’s recommendations seriously and take action to address the issue of skyrocketing airfares to Srinagar.
