Police plan to arrest more people in the run up to the general elections. Sources in the police said their focus is to keep “trouble makers in check” so that there is no untoward incident and people come out to vote in a “fear-free environment”.
“The process to arrest potential trouble makers is underway,” a senior superintendent of police told Kashmir Post.
He said every arrest will be made after a thorough background check.
“Some people have changed and now we do not want them in custody,” he said.
Another senior police official said while providing a secure atmosphere for the polls was a challenge, there is a good synergy between various security agencies and several steps will have to be taken to provide a general sense of security in the valley.

Last week, the government launched a massive crackdown on separatists and detained scores of people, mainly Jamaat-e-Islami activists, including its chief Abdul Hamid Fayaz.
Though police termed the action as routine, saying that leaders and “potential stone pelters” have been picked up in the past also, officials privy to the development said this was the first major crackdown on the Jamaat-e-Islami.
Director general police Dilbag Singh said the situation in the state is under control and the forces were making efforts to create a sense of security so that the people come out to vote.
“We will ensure incident-free elections in the state,” he told Kashmir Post.
“People of Kashmir are good, peace-loving and there will be peaceful elections,” he added.
Singh said that the police will deal with the people calling for
