Manzoor Ahmad Deva, 32, who was working with the Army as a Lance Naik, and killed like a sitting duck during the attack on Sunjwan Army camp, had not been issued weapons while no Army personnel guarded the family quarters he was staying in.
Talking to Kashmir Post, his wife Afrooza Begum said her husband did not have weapons to respond and the family was sleeping when the gunmen opened first fire.
“Then they started knocking at our doors and were successful in breaking into our room, and killed my husband on the spot,” she said. “When my husband tried to standup from bed, they fired several rounds of bullets at him in front of me.”
Afrooza said she was unconscious for two days and did not even have an idea who had rescued her and her children, who were crying when the gunmen was kicking at the door.
“The gunmen were roaming from room to room in the family quarters as not even a single Army personnel guarded the family quarters,” she said.
Deva was buried at his native village Kewa Qazigund at around 5 pm on Wednesday and thousands of people participated in his funeral prayers.
DC Anantnag, SSP Kulgam, SDM Qazigund and CAO 9RR were present on the occasion to pay tributes to the slain Deva.
Deva leaves behind two daughters, Rutba Manzoor, who studies in UKG at Dream High Public School Qazigund and three-year-old Adeeba Manzoor.
Another relative of Deva told Kashmir Post that he stayed in the family quarters with him few days back and did not seen even a single Army personnel guarding the quarters.
He said contrary to this the officers’ quarters in the same compound have high security bandobast.
“We demand a high level probe into why he was not given the arms by officers,” Deva’s relative said. “The probe should also look into the reason why the family quarters had been left without being secured.”
