Army foils BAT attack in Poonch sector, 3 Civilians injured during Pak Firing in Uri Sector

Averting a major tragedy, the Army on Sunday night foiled an attempt of Pakistan’s Border Action Team (BAT) to cross the Line of Control (LoC) in the Poonch sector, killing one intruder.
Two other BAT members were seriously injured but they managed to return amid heavy firing.
The body of the intruder and a huge cache of arms and ammunition were recovered in the morning. The incident occurred ahead of the fence in the Gulpur area. The BAT team had reached near an Indian post when its movement was observed by the alert troops.
Giving detail, PRO Defence, Jammu, Lt Col Devender Anand said the Pakistan army initiated unprovoked and indiscriminate firing of small arms, automatics and mortars around 5.15 pm on Sunday to which the Indian Army responded.
“The alert troops noticed some movement and immediately engaged the group with effective fire. There was an immediate retaliation from the armed intruders. The supporting and covering fire from Pakistani posts with a view to cover the move and help in extrication of the armed intruders continued unabated,” the PRO said.
“In the ensuing firefight, one armed intruder was killed and at least two other attackers sustained grievous injuries. They were seen returning towards the Pakistani post,” Lt Colonel Anand said.
During the search operation, the Army recovered the intruder’s body, three rocket-propelled grenades grenades, four disposable rocket launchers, two IKOM radio sets, one AK magazine, two Molotov cocktails, four UBGL grenades, seven hand grenades, one PIKA ammunition belt, one mobile phone, three backpacks, medical satchel and a Pakistani flag.
Giving details, Lt Colonel Anand said the modus operandi adopted by the Pakistan army and its sponsored terrorists was similar to the previous infiltration attempts, like Keri, Gambir and Sunjuwan.
“The Pakistan army and Special Service Group have provided fire supply and abetted operations by non-state actors who have been utilised as cannon fodder. The recovery of weapons, like disposable rocket launchers, rocket-propelled grenades and incendiary ammunition, clearly indicates implicit support of the Pakistan army to target and cause causalities while maintaining a degree of deniability,” he said.
“We will offer to hand over the body of the killed intruder to the Pakistan army,” the PRO said, adding that after the Sunjuwan incident, Pakistan had refused to accept the bodies of its citizens.

Meanwhile, Pakistani troops fired at Indian positions along the Line of Control in Uri sector of Jammu and Kashmir, injuring three civilians, police said today.
“Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked firing at Churanda in Silikote area of Hajipeer sector, Uri,” a police officer said. Uri is some 105 km from state capital Srinagar.
Three civilians who were injured in the Pakistani firing were taken to a hospital, the officer said.
