Cold wave continued to prevail across Kashmir as the mercury fell to -6.1°C in Srinagar city last night.
The freezing cold gave a tough time to the city residents as water supply was hampered due to frozen taps. The Dal Lake continued to be partially frozen for the second day. “The sky remained bright and clear throughout the day due to which the mercury is further expected to dip by a few notches in the coming days,” said Sonam Lotus, Director, Meteorological Department.
The official said the weather would mainly remain dry for the week except for the light rain or snow at isolated places on higher reaches.
The tourist resorts of Pahalgam and Gulmarg recorded -8.1°C and -10.6°C, respectively. In Kupwara temperature fell to -5.5°C while in Kokernag it was -4.2°C.
In the Jammu region, Jammu city recorded 4.3°C, Katra 5°C, Batote 1.6°C, Banihal 0.8°C, Bhaderwah 0.8°C and Udhampur 3°C.
Kashmir is currently under the grip of ‘chillai kalan,’ the 40-day harshest period of winter which ends on January 30. During the period, there are high chances of snowfall and temperature drops considerably.
