With the election results for the student body of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) declared, a Kashmiri scholar has been elected as the vice-president of the AMU Students’ Union.
Sajad Subhan Rather has become the first Kashmiri to grab the coveted post of vice-president of the students’ body of the AMU, one of the largest residential universities in north India located in Aligarh, Utttar Pradesh. In fact, the AMU campus has one of the largest presence of a vibrant student community from the Kashmir valley and other parts of J&K.
Having attended Degree College, Baramulla, in north Kashmir, Rather is presently pursuing PhD in history from the AMU.
“We will create pressure on the government by raising voice on the issue of mob lynchings. My success is not merely mine but it is the success of all the students of the AMU. I want to see each and every citizen reach new heights in their lives,” Rather told the media in the AMU campus soon after the election results of the students’ union were declared late Monday evening.
Rather won by polling 5,711 votes. He defeated his nearest rival Aijaz Ahmed by a margin of 3,106 votes while Vikrant Joshi got 1,935 votes. There were total six candidates for the post of vice-president.
Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) student Mashkoor Ahmad Usmani has been named the president of the students’ union. Mohammad Fahad, an agro-business student, has been elected to the secretary’s post.
Earlier, while making his final speech at the union hall before the student community, Rather had said, “The students’ union as per its constitution is only meant for debate, discussion and dialogue. Judge the candidate by his capabilities. I don’t support regionalism, I don’t support lobbyism and I am against favouritism. I just want to improve the academic atmosphere in the university and work for the students.”
