Winter chill in Jammu and Kashmir has started knocking the doors as night temperatures dipped at many places in the state.
Leh in frontier region of Ladakh registered a low of minus 5.9 degrees Celsius this morning, making it the coldest place in the state. The situation was not different in the neighboring Kargil , as it also recorded minus 5.2 degrees Celsius, met office said.
The sky resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded a low of minus 4.5 while hill resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded a minimum of 0.7 degrees Celsius.
Srinagar, the summer capital of the state, recorded a minimum temperature of 1.1, while winter capital, Jammu, registered a minimum temperature of 11.2, Bannihal ( 1.7), Katra (10), Batote (3.6) and Bhaderwah (3.6) .
Higher reaches including Chandanwari, Sonamarg and Gulmarg had received snowfall on Wednesday that forced the closure of many mountain passes, including the, 11,600 feet high Zojilla Pass, the only surface link between Kashmir and the Ladakh region.
Weathermen forecast light rain or snow at scattered places in the state during next 24 hours.
