BJP seeks rotation of reserved Assembly seats

In the first meeting of the re-constituted Coalition Coordination Committee, BJP’s representatives emphasised rotating Assembly constituencies reserved for Scheduled Castes (SCs) in Jammu province.
Although many issues were discussed in the nearly two-hour meeting held today after a gap of over two years, the focus of BJP’s representatives was on the rotation of reserved constituencies, solving problems of West Pakistan refugees and enhancing quota for other backward classes. Sources said BJP’s representatives pointed out that Assembly constituencies were reserved after a delimitation exercise in 1996. After passing of 20 years, it was state’s constitutional obligation to rotate these segments so that SCs could be given representation from the other areas also. RS Pura, Chhamb, Domana, Hiranagar, Samba, Ramban and Chenani Assembly segments are reserved for SCs since 1996. Creating a history, the BJP had won all these seven Assembly segments in the 2014 Assembly elections when the party had won 25 seats in Jammu province.
Today’s meeting was held under the chairmanship of Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh and attended by Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Revenue, Relief, Abdul Rahman Veeri, Jugal Kishore, Thupstan Chewang, Shamsher Singh Manhas, Sartaj Madni, Dillawar Mir, and Narinder Singh.
