Seeking a report indicating the progress in the removal of water lilies from the Dal Lake, the J&K High Court has directed the authorities concerned to continue the process of weeding so that the lake surface is clearly visible.
Earlier on August 13, the High Court had given the Lakes and Waterways Development Authority (LAWDA) three months to take out lilies from the lake.
The court is hearing a public interest litigation on the conservation and preservation of the Dal Lake and the adjoining Nigeen Lake.
The court during the proceedings of the PIL on Wednesday observed that the main concern was unabated growth of water lilies and other weeds throughout the lake.
The bench observed that the Dal should be visible. Due to the growth of lilies and weeds, it “looks like a vegetable market”, it said.
According to the status report of LAWDA, which was seen by the court today, the drive for the removal of water lilies and other weeds came into force on August 7 and to date, .3 sq km of the lake surface has been cleared and the extent of coverage is estimated to be 5 sq km.
In fresh directions yesterday, the High Court has sought the report on the progress of removal of lilies and weeding along with photopraphs on the next date.
