Ramesh Arora, a BJP MLC from Jammu today said that ‘consumption of momos (dumpling) and use of ajinomoto salt is root cause of several life-threatening diseases, including migraine and cancer’.
“Momos contain the carcinogenic monosodium glutamate or ajinomoto, which is harmful to health. It has been found to be the root cause of several life-threatening diseases, including cancer of the intestines. These dumplings are much more dangerous than nicotine or alcohol,” said advocate and member legislative council Ramesh Arora.
He added that seven samples of momos were collected by the department from posh localities of this winter capital and as per report, six of them have been found unhygienic and unsafe having health hazards, while report of seventh sample is yet to be received. “Momos have been found to be the root cause of several life-threatening diseases, including cancer of the intestines,” he said.
“Ajinomoto or Monosodium Glutamate (MSG), a kind of salt, causes serious diseases, including cancer. It is responsible for converting a minor headache into migraine,” he said, adding, “The salt induces the pancreas to excrete extra drops of insulin, causing imbalance in the body, and prompts people to overeat as it triggers hunger. Besides memory loss, regular consumption for two to three years causes cancer of the stomach”. “They are found to be more harmful than alcohol and other drugs,” he said.
“We want that the government should impose blanket ban on sale of momos in every nook and corner of the state besides use of Ajinomoto salt in food items on sale in the hotels, restaurants and clubs,”’ he said.
The MLC, however, said that he has also approached to the State Health Minister Bali Bhagat and he has assured him to impose ban on sale of momos, noodles and other Chinese food items.
Earlier, BJP legislator hit national headlines after he started a campaign for a ban against the cheap street food from Jammu city. People, mostly in north eastern states, where momos are considered as ethnic cuisine trolled BJP lawmaker for dictating about food habits.
