Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti conducted a surprise visit of various areas of Srinagar city late last night to take an on-the-spot appraisal of the civic amenities, an official spokesman said.
“The Chief Minister specifically checked the availability and status of power supply, functioning of street lights, cleanliness of lanes, drainage facilities in low-lying areas and other civic amenities being provided to the people,” the government spokesman said.
During her surprise visit, conducted despite hail and downpour, the Chief Minister visited the Dalgate, Boulevard, Nishat, Hazratbal, Nigeen, Kathidarwaza, Zindashah Masjid, Rainawari, Khanyar, Nawpora, Khayam Chowk, Munawarabad, Lal Chowk, Maharaja Bazar, Jawahar Nagar, Rajbagh and Sonwar areas of the city.
“Soon after the two-hour late-night inspection of these areas, the Chief Minister convened a meeting of senior officials dealing with city administration,” the spokesman said.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister expressed dismay over the “poor service delivery of civic amenities in some areas”. “She expressed her displeasure over the street lights not functioning in many areas while issuing directions for urgent repair of the damaged lights and installation of high-mast lighting at major junctions or chowks and busy areas,” the spokesman said.
The Chief Minister ordered regular and routine cleaning of drains, roads and lanes in the city and proper dumping of waste.
She also asked the officials to improve the level of civic amenities and other facilities provided by the government in these areas and directed the Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar, to conduct regular visits to the city areas.
