PDP’s Convention stoned in Kulgam, 2 workers injured

Two workers of ruling Peoples Democratic Party were injured after youth attacked the party’s convention in Chawalgam village of southern Kulgam district on Sunday.
The convention was held at Dak Bungalow-cum-Rest House in Chawalgam amid stringent security arrangements. Senior PDP leader and Minister for Rural Development Abdul Haq Khan, Member Parliament Nazir Ahmad Laway and MLA Noorabad, Abdul Majeed Paddar were present at the convention.
Reports said as the convention was on, some youth appeared on the scene amid pro-freedom sloganeering and started pelting stones from backside of the Dak Bungalow, triggering chaos and panic.
“Two PDP workers sustained injuries after being hit by stones,” they said. The duo was immediately shifted to District Hospital.
“We received two people with stone injuries and they were discharged after proper treatment,” Medical Superintendent of Kulgam District Hospital, Dr Roshan Din told Kashmir Post.
PDP kick-started the poll campaign for upcoming Parliament by-elections from Anantnag on Saturday where its candidate Mufti Tassaduq Hussain, brother of Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, addressed a gathering of workers inside the conference hall of Dak Banglow at Khanabal. Hussain is pitted against GA Mir, the joint candidate of NC-Congress combine.
Both pro-freedom and militant leadership have called for a complete boycott of the polls that come at a time when security situation in South Kashmir is on the edge, especially in the backdrop of frequent confrontation between forces and people during gunfights. The area also remained the epicenter of protests during last year’s uprising triggered by the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani.
