The Hurriyat Conference today backed the students of Kashmir University who are protesting against the disappearance of a law student who went missing ever since he took part in a demonstration on the university campus a few ago.
Protests were held today on the campus by the students demanding to know whereabouts of the 3rd semester student of LLB. According to reports, the missing student was last seen on the campus on February 21. A few days earlier, he had taken part in a protest organised by university students against the Kulgam civilian killings in an encounter.
The protesting students said Aqib Mir of the Law Department went missing mysteriously after leaving the campus on Tuesday. The boy hails from Shopian in south Kashmir, a university official said.
On the other hand, Public Relations Officer, Kashmir University, Faheem Aslam told Kashmir Post that the Vice Chancellor had already taken up the matter with the police and the government at the highest level.
“We have been told by the police that he has not been picked up by them. But at the same time, the VC has written to the Director General of Police and also taken up the matter with Chief Minister’s office to ensure the safety of the student,” Faheem said.
Expressing its concern over the disappearance of the student, the moderate Hurriyat Conference, headed by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, in a statement today termed the protest as justified.
The Hurriyat further added that it was the responsibility of the state government to take immediate steps to trace the missing student.
Police refute allegation
The Jammu and Kashmir Police have refuted the allegation that the missing student of the University of Kashmir was picked up by them for questioning. “The Proctor, University of Kashmir, on February 22 reported that Aqib Mushtaq Malik, son of Mushtaq Ahmad, a resident of Pinjura, Shopian, student of 3rd semester of LLB, University of Kashmir, was missing from February 21 evening. Following this information, a missing report was lodged at the Nigeen police station and efforts are being made to trace the missing student,” the police said in a statement on Thursday. “Meanwhile, some students have alleged that the missing student was picked up by the police. The allegations are refuted as the missing student was not required for any investigation by the police,” the statement said. The police have sought cooperation from students, relatives and friends of the missing student to trace him at the earliest.
