The Congress today staged a demonstration against the hike in prices of ration being supplied to the public at fair price shops in the state.
Hundreds of Congress workers, led by Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) general secretary Manmohan Singh, assembled at Shaktinagar Chowk and took out a procession up to Gurah-Morh, Bakshi Nagar.
Carrying placards, the protesters raised slogans against the ruling PDP-BJP coalition and slammed it for hiking prices of ration at government depots.
Manmohan Singh, while addressing protesters, alleged that the PDP-BJP combine had failed to fulfil the expectations of masses in the state. “J&K is passing through the worst-ever period since Independence. If there is anything described as bad governance, the people of J&K had experienced it in the past four months,” he said.
The Congress leader said the price of flour and rice had been suddenly raised by Rs 5 per kg by the government. “This has led to a lot of pressure on poor people who are already fighting the menace of inflation,” he said, adding that the recent demonetisation had broken the back of the state and the country.
Kanta Bhan, vice-president, PCC and Anil Chopra, president, District Congress Committee (Urban), Jammu, also made scathing attacks on the state government.
“People of the state are already suffering a lot due to continuous border firing and now, the increase in prices of ration at this juncture is a severe blow on the common man,” they said.
