Police launches crackdown in Natipora after ‘Abduction’ of cop by stone pelters

Residents of Natipora area in uptown Srinagar Friday alleged that police and CRPF men launched a “crackdown” in the area after the alleged abduction of policeman by the stone pelters .
Locals told Kashmir Post that large number of police and CRPF men launched the crackdown in Natipora and adjoining areas to trace the “abducted” policeman.
They said that forces restricted the civilian movement in the area and did not allow residents to move out of their houses.
The locals said a policeman, who was allegedly video-graphing stone pelting youth, was caught and taken away by the stone pelters.
“The youth recovered a police Identity card from his possession. He was beaten by the youth and whisked away,” they said.
Locals said soon after the incident, huge deployment of police CRPF was rushed to the area to trace the cop.
They said the crackdown was going on till late evening.
SHO police station Sadder Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din told Kashmir Post that youth had caught a civilian during the stone pelting in Natipora area. “They beat him up but he managed to escape from their clutches,” he said adding no policeman was abducted and no crackdown launched in Natipora.
He said police only patrolled the area in the evening to chase away stone pelters, who were attacking civilian vehicles.
Meanwhile, SSP Srinagar Amit Kumar did not reply to repeated calls from this newspaper.
