‘Minister’s remark on alcohol provocative’
Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) today expressed deep anguish at refusal of government to ban sale and trade of liquor in Jammu and Kashmir (JK).
While in many states alcohol is banned for public safety, President DAK Dr Nisar ul Hassan in a statement said that liquor is being promoted in JK putting lives of people at risk.
Finance Minister’s remark on the floor of the house that there should be freedom of choice for alcohol is highly provocative.
This statement from a Muslim Minister is unacceptable and it has hurt the religious sentiments of people of the state.
Use and trade of alcohol is Haram (forbidden) in Islam, so there is no question of choice.
Allah in Quran says intoxicants (Alcohol) are abominations of Satan’s handiwork and Muslims were ordered to abstain.
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) also warned his followers that participating in alcohol trade is forbidden.
The revenue generated from the sales of alcohol is also Haram.
So it is the duty of every Muslim to abide by the commandment and oppose the sale and trade of alcohol.
JK being a tourist destination does not mean that we will allow social evils in our state.
Alcohol is a major social evil and it has not only destroyed individuals and families but the entire society.
It is the mother of all evils as it promotes a man to do evils.
It disinhibits the mind and alcoholics commit disorderly conduct and are involved in immorality.
Liquor is dangerous for health and it kills and causes morbidities.
It causes heart attack, stroke and even cancer.
It is ironical despite serious health consequences government is approving consumption of alcohol.
Because of easy availability young people who are vulnerable have become victims of this menace.
In order to ensure welfare of people, states like Gujarat, Nagaland, Lakshadweep, Kerala and recently Bihar have banned alcohol.
State is constitutionally bound to prohibit alcohol and JK being Muslim dominant, government has moral obligation to ban use and trade of alcohol.
