This summer even Srinagar is feeling the heat as the daytime temperature has risen six to seven degrees above the average in Kashmir valley.
In the Jammu division also the situation is no better as the Weather Department has already issued an alert for a heat wave.
The Meteorological Department said that the maximum temperature in the city over the last two days has remained above 30-degree mark. This was six to seven degrees above the normal temperature at this time of the season.
The mercury here on Wednesday touched a high of 31 degree Celsius, which was six degrees above the normal. It was 30.7 degree Celsius on Thursday and 30.9 degree Celsius today.
Four stations across the Kashmir division, including the meadow resort of Pahalgam located in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, have recorded temperatures which were six to seven degrees above normal.
An increasingly hot weather in the city is nearing the high that was recorded in May, 2007, when mercury rose to 32.4 degree Celsius.
However, the hottest day in May in Srinagar was in 1968 when mercury had touched 36.4 degree Celsius, said Director, Meteorological Department, Sonam Lotus.
The seven-day forecast of the Indian Meteorological Department has predicted a further increase in the day temperature which may near 33.0 degree on Sunday and Monday in the city.
The department in its Friday morning forecast bulletin said weather in the state “will be hot and dry” for at least next 24 hours and warned that a “heat wave condition” will occur at few places in plains of the Jammu division.
The maximum temperature in Jammu district on Friday touched 41.8 degree Celsius while on Thursday it had touched 43.2 degree Celsius, which was five degrees above the normal.
Jammu registered its hottest May day in 1984 when the mercury had touched 47.4 degree Celsius.
