Srinagar to get a ring road to ease traffic

Srinagar to get a ring road to ease trafficThe district may soon get a ring road which will provide an alternate route for the traffic moving between North and South Kashmir and ease the traffic congestion inside the city.
In the project discussed at a high-level meeting on Saturday, officials planned the construction of a four-lane ring road. They said, “This will go a long way in easing traffic congestion in the city and reduce cost, time and distance.” In the first phase of the project, a four-lane ring road will be constructed from Galander near Pampore town to Narbal on city outskirts here. In the second phase, a two-lane ring road will be constructed from Narbal to Wayul.
The project was discussed at a meeting convened by Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Asgar Samoon, yesterday and attended by officials of National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), deputy commissioners of Srinagar, Budgam, Pulwama and Ganderbal, and several government departments concerned.
The new ring road will ease the pressure on the existing bypass that circles around the western edge of the city from Pantha Chowk to Parimpora, and limit the entry of traffic — moving between districts of North and South Kashmir — into the city outskirts.
The NHAI officials informed the meeting that the ring road would reduce cost, time and distance, and involve the districts of Pulwama, Budgam, Baramulla, Bandipora and Ganderbal.
The project would be implemented on a cost sharing basis of 90:10 between the Centre and state.
The issues of land acquisition, forest land and trees, assessment of structures that would affect the project, requirement and supply of construction material and clearances from various departments were discussed threadbare at the meeting.
Highlighting the need to consider the ecological and environmental aspects of the project, the divisional commissioner also called for its implementation on a war-footing. He also set the timelines for completion of various preliminary formalities.
