Call state-level magisterial probe an eyewash, boycott classes for eighth day
Rejecting the state government’s decision to hold a magisterial probe into the NIT-Srinagar controversy, non-Kashmiri students at the institute today demanded a CBI probe into the issue.
Describing the magisterial probe as an “eyewash” and an attempt to “cover up the brutalities” of the state police, the non-Kashmiri students today appealed to the HRD and Home Ministries to intervene and order a CBI probe into the matter.
Nearly 1,500 Non-Kashmir students continued to boycott their classes for the eighth consecutive day today. However the protest demonstration was suspended to facilitate Friday prayers and the first Navratra.
“We have suspended our protest demonstration for Friday prayers and the first Navratra. Our agitation is not communal and we respect all religions. There is a mosque on the campus where people come for Friday prayers and it was the first Navratra as well so we do not want to disrupt religious sentiments of any community,” a non-Kashmiri NIT student told over phone.
Though the situation remained peaceful on the campus today, the non-Kashmiri students rejected the magisterial probe ordered by the state government on Thursday.
“We have no faith in the state-level probe. We want the Central government to intervene in the matter and order a CBI probe into the matter,” said a student.
“We have enough evidence of everything we narrated to the media and to the team of the HRD Ministry that visited the campus. We will provide the evidence to the CBI only so that justice can be done,” he added.
The J&K Government had ordered a magisterial probe on the NIT issue under Additional Deputy Commissioner Nazir Ahmed Baba, who has to submit his report in two weeks.
The non-Kashmiri students today again raised their demand for shifting the campus out of the Kashmir valley.
The unrest in NIT-Srinagar campus began after some local students celebrated India’s defeat in the T-20 world cup semi-final on March 31.
