The Jammu and Kashmir Economic Reconstruction Agency has been told to conduct safety audit of under-construction flyover projects in the state following the recent flyover collapse in Kolkata.
“Keeping in view the recent unfortunate flyover accident in Kolkata, the state government has ordered for safety audit of all the under-construction flyover projects in the state, including the two flyovers being constructed by the ERA in Srinagar and Jammu,” Economic Reconstruction Agency (ERA) spokesperson Muhammad Azhar said after a meeting of a four-member team of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), led by Atsushi Kaneko, Senior Portfolio Manager, with ERA officials.
In the past two days, the ADB team reviewed the progress of various projects being executed by the ERA under the ongoing Jammu and Kashmir Urban Sector Development Investment Programme.
The ADB mission visited various sites, including the Jehangir Chowk-Rambagh expressway corridor, multilevel parking facility at KMDA, Athwajan drainage project along the national highway bypass and Mehjoor Bridge, said the spokesperson.
The ADB representatives also inspected revamping works at pumping stations along the banks of Jhelum.
ERA Chief Executive Officer Vinod Sharma, meanwhile, informed the visiting team that till date, Rs 818 crore had been spent by the agency under the ongoing J&K Urban Sector Development Investment Programme.
The ADB team also met Srinagar Municipal Corporation Commissioner Bashir Ahmad Khan and expressed concern about prevailing conditions at the Achan landfill site.
“The SMC Commissioner conveyed the state government’s resolve to operate the Achan landfill site as per the solid waste management guidelines. The team, however, expressed satisfaction with the overall progress of works and appreciated the efforts being made by the ERA to strengthen the safety measures of under construction flyover projects,” added the spokesperson.
