The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) today launched an extensive sanitation drive along the banks of the Jhelum river that has become a dumping ground for solid wastes.
On the first day, the drive was kicked off in areas near Lasjan and Pantha Chowk, in presence of Srinagar Deputy Commissioner Farooq Ahmed Lone and SMC Commissioner Bashir Ahmed Khan.
“During the drive, the officials concerned were directed to keep proper cleanliness in and around the banks of the Jhelum and other adjoining locations,” the officials said.
The drive would be extended to different parts of the city. Hundreds of sanitary workers were involved in the drive who cleared off garbage and polythene from the rivers banks today, the officials said.
“It was also emphasised upon the officials concerned to improvise upon the over all sanitation of the city, with a major focus on hospitals, religious places, river banks and other essential places,” SMC officials added.
On the occasion, Bashir Ahmed Khan personally appealed to the general public to contact SMC helpline— 2474499 in case they had any sanitation issues and if garbage lied unattended in their respective areas.
“People can contact me for their grievances related to illegal constructions, encroachments and streetlight repairs,” the Commissioner added.
