Hundreds of vehicles stranded on the 300-km highway which connects the Valley with Jammu division were allowed to proceed to their destinations today.
The Jammu-Srinagar national highway was closed to traffic on Thursday following snowfall, making it slippery and dangerous for vehicular traffic.
An official of the Traffic Department said only stranded vehicles were allowed to move today following improvement in weather.
“The highway was cleared this morning and those vehicles which were stranded since Thursday were allowed to move,” said an official at the Traffic Control Room in Srinagar.
The Jammu-Srinagar highway is a crucial arterial link between Kashmir and Jammu and also serves as the main supply route for essentials to the Valley. The Kashmir valley received the season’s first widespread snowfall on Thursday, ending a lengthy dry spell.
The tourist resorts of Gulmarg and Pahalgam and other higher reaches in the Valley received a moderate-intensity snowfall on Thursday while light snow and rain was received in the plains.
Most districts of the Valley received no snowfall during the main winter period which ended last week.
The weather bulletin issued by the Meteorological Department said the weather was likely to improve further in the coming days. The department said isolated downpour was expected in Kashmir division on Saturday.
