Deliver on promises or break alliance: Omar to Mehbooba

Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has asked PDP president Mehbooba Mufti to either deliver on the promises made to people of Jammu and Kashmir or break the alliance with the BJP.
“Mehbooba Mufti, or the PDP for that matter, has two options — to either deliver on the promises made to people of J&K or break the alliance with the BJP. To hang on to this alliance with the BJP for dear life while pretending to be the unwavering example of high morality is akin to aspiring to have the cake and eat it too,” Omar said in a statement on Facebook.
The NC working president said it was evident in the PDP’s statement, which was issued at the conclusion of its meeting yesterday, that the PDP-BJP alliance was intact and no condition had been set by the PDP.
“While the PDP has declared that the PDP-BJP ‘Agenda of Alliance’ is a ‘sacred document’ and the PDP continues to be in awe of the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, there is an inexplicable delay in government formation,” Omar said.
Government formation in Jammu and Kashmir had been in limbo as Mehbooba remained in no hurry to take oath as Chief Minister following the death of her father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed earlier this month.
Omar said the common perception was that the delay was to “salvage some bare minimum credibility for the PDP and create a smokescreen of stiff morality”.
“People of Jammu and Kashmir continue to be deprived of an elected government while two political parties with a combined majority continue to be in an alliance, which is bizarre and unprecedented. This posturing and political drama comes at the cost of uncertainty, instability and chaos in the state,” he said.
Omar said if Mehbooba could not rise to the occasion, “she should end the alliance with the BJP on the basis of the PDP’s alleged reservations and regrets over the previous 10 months and we can go back to the people for fresh elections”.
“The longer Mehbooba delays the imminent government formation with the BJP, the more people will expect her to extract concessions from the Centre,” Omar said.
“I wish her the best of luck in her political games with the genuine disappointment that these political games and theatrics come at a grave cost to the common man in J&K who continues to be surrounded by an eerie political uncertainty,” he said.
