At-least three youth received pellet injuries after the clashes erupted in some areas of old Srinagar city after Friday congregational prayers.
Eyewitnesses said that shortly before the Friday congregational prayers a large contingent of police cordoned off Jamia Masjid Srinagar that sparked protest in the area. The protests spread in adjacent areas including Gojwara. Reports said that amid pro-freedom slogans, group of youth waved posters of Islamic State and Hizb Chief Syed Salahuddin. The protesting masked youth also unfurled Pakistani national flags.
“Police initially exercised restraint. As the protests intensified, the youth resorted to stone pelting leading to massive clashes between police and protestors,” reports said, adding that “Police lobbed tear gas shells, pellets and also fired rubber bullets to disperse the protesters.
Eyewitnesses told CNS that three youth suffered pellet injuries. The protests that started at Nowhatta Chowk, later spilled over to other areas that include Gojwar and Rajouri Kadal, disrupting normal activities.
President Shopkeepers Association Nowhatta Muhammad Amin alleged that few tear-smoke shells that police lobbed on protesters hit two shops. “One shell hit an electronic shop and another one caused damage to footware shop. Clashes on Friday have become a routine here and we appeal police stay indoors after every Friday prayer,” he told CNS.
