Police in Jammu and Kashmir have detained at least 237 persons, including activists of separatist outfits and former militants in the run-up to PM Modi’s visit to the state on November 7.
A top police official disclosed that 141 activists of separatist outfits and 96 former militants were detained during past week at various police stations across Kashmir valley to ensure “fool-proof” security to Modi during his November 7 visit to the state.
“21 activists have been detained in Srinagar, followed by Baramulla, Budgam, Shopian, Anantnag, Awantipora, Sopore, Bandipora, Handwara, Kupwara and Ganderbal with 21, 16, 14, 11, 10, 8, 8, 6, 4 and 2 respectively,” said the official.
He said that 59 out of 96 ex-militants have been detained in Srinagar alone.
Police and security agencies are going all out to ensure a high-tech security for Modi’s visit.
Besides closing the Srinagar-Jammu highway to general traffic, restrictions will be imposed on movements of pedestrians and motorists on the day, said an official.
The heightened security comes in the wake of ‘Srinagar million march’ announced by Hurriyat (G) and supported by all separatist outfits, including Hurriyat (M) and JKLF, to counter the Modi’s rally.
Top separatist leaders Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq have been placed under house detention while JKLF chief Yasin Malik is lodged at police station Kothibagh in Srinagar.
