The veteran Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani, has strongly denounced the hanging of a Muslim, Yaqoob Memon, in India in connection with 1993 Mumbai blast.Syed Ali Gilani in a statement issued in Srinagar said that Yaqoob Memon was executed for being a member of the minority community. He said that voices within India were being raised, questioning the legality of sending Yaqoob Memon to the gallows.
The veteran leader expressed dismay over the manner in which trial of the victim was held in New Delhi. “We condemn and resist such measures in which a person is being victimised only because he hails from a minority community,” he said.
Syed Ali Gilani maintained that when Kashmiri youth, Muhammad Afzal Guru, was hanged, the Indian Supreme Court in clear terms stated that he was being executed to satisfy the collective conscience of the people of India.
