Cloudburst triggers flash floods in Shopian, Flashflood hits Dachigam, man drowns

Cloudburst caused flash floods in Sedow and Hirpora villages of Shopian on Tuesday damaging at least two residential houses, devastating a few apple orchards while several domestic animals perished, officials and witnesses said.
At least six animals were washed away by the fast currents as the flash flood struck the areas, a district official said, adding two residential houses also suffered partial damage in Dachoo village.
District Development Commissioner, Owais Ahmad said a team of officials had been sent to both the areas to take stock of the situation.

One person drowned in a gushing stream and is feared to have died as heavy rain overnight triggered a flashflood in the mountainous Dachigam area, a national park on the outskirts of the city.
A police official said one person, identified as Gulzar Ahmad of Rajouri district, drowned in a gushing stream when he was trying to retrieve logs carried downstream by the flashflood.
The official said the operation to retrieve the body was underway for the past seven hours.
The flashflood was triggered during the night due to heavy rain over the Dagwan and Mahadev mountains, the official said.
There were speculations that the flashflood was caused by a cloudburst. The official, however, said there was no cloudburst in the area.
Dachigam, which witnessed heavy rain overnight, is a national park and also home to hangul — endangered deer species only found in Kashmir.
Due to the flashflood, muddy water and tree logs flowed into the gushing streams of Dachigam and Tailbal. The rainwater also flooded the area under crops on the outskirts of the city.
The roads in several localities were flooded with muddy water but there was no report of damage to residential and commercial structures in the area.
