Univarsities across Kashmir witness student protests against civilian killings

Students of different universities of Kashmir valley Wednesday protested against the killing of civilians and Assistant Professor turned militant, Mohammad Rafi Bhat.
Scores of students of University of Kashmir protested in solidarity with the Assistant Professor turned militant who was killed during an encounter in Badigam village of south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Sunday.
Eyewitnesses told Kashmir Post that the students of different departments assembled outside the Iqbal Library and started demonstrating against the killings.
The protesting students at KU were carrying a banner reading “In memory of Shaheed Dr Mohd Rafi and all those who died for our freedom.”
During protests a Pakistani flag was also hoisted outside the Allama Iqbal Library. The students carrying banners and placards urged the authorities to name the park outside Sociology Department ‘In memory of Dr. Rafi Park’ as solidarity with the professor. The students also raised a banner atop the Sociology Department as a mark of tribute to the slain professor with lines ‘In Memory of Shaheed Dr. Rafi and All Those Who Died for Our Freedom’ written over it.
Similarly, the students of Central University of Kashmir (CUK) and Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), Awantipora protested against the killing of civilians and assistant professor.
The protesting students of various departments took to the lawns of the IUST campus and assembled near the main entrance. The students were raised pro-freedom slogans and demanded an immediate end to the civilian killings.
An official at IUST said, “The students protested against the civilian killings in the morning and later the class work resumed peacefully.”
The students of Central University of Kashmir (CUK) staged a protest demonstration against the civilian killings. Eyewitnesses said the students of CUK, Nowgam campus shouted anti-government slogans and demanded end to civilian killings. They said a group of students offered prayers in absentia for the slain civilians and Mohammad Rafi.
Registrar, CUK said, “The students were protesting against the civilian killings. The protest concluded peacefully and class work went on smoothly. I have no knowledge and information whether the prayers in absentia were held inside the campus or not.”
