Ashraf Sehrai elevated to chairman of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, replaces Sayed Ali Geelani

Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai Monday replaced octogenarian leader Syed Ali Geelani as the chairman of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat (TeH).

Hurriyat sources told Kashmir Post that the election within the party will be held later this year and Sehrai will till then would continue as TeH chairman.

Geelani won consecutive elections over the years and remained at the top post for continuous 18 years ever since its formation.

Sehrai was considered the second strong leader of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat and has served as its general secretary over the years.

A senior leader of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat (TeH) confirmed to Kashmir Post that Geelani has announced Sehrai as the new Chairman of the party.

“Geelani has taken the decision that Sehrai will take over as the new chairman of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat. Geelani cited health reasons and other political burdens…so he wanted Sehrai to take over the responsibility of TeH,” he said.

In view of the restriction imposed by the state government on office-cum-residence of Geelani, the ceremony took place at a humble function attended by few other leaders of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat and Hurriyat (G).

Sehrai is a lifelong friend and comrade of Geelani.
