2666 deaths in 15996 mishaps, Jammu region saw highest road deaths in last 3 years

Jammu district has reported the highest number of casualties, injuries and accidents in the state in the past three years. The state has witnessed 2,666 deaths and 22,021 injuries in 15,996 road accidents in the past three years.
The data was released by the Minister in charge of Transport in the Legislative Council on Thursday. The data gave the district-wise number of road accidents and persons killed or injured in the state from 2015 to October 2017.
Jammu district reported the highest number of 3,721 accidents which killed 408 persons and injured 2,585 in the past three years. Shopian district in Kashmir division saw the lowest number of 19 deaths in 131 accidents in the past three years.
To a question tabled by National Conference MLC Sajjad Ahmed Kichloo in the Legislative Council about the establishment of two model Institutes of Drivers Training and Research announced by the government in last Budget session, the minister in charge said 100 kanal at Ghaink, Kot Bhalwal, had been acquired for the establishment of the institute in 2013. He said a detailed project report of the project prepared through the Jammu and Kashmir Projects Construction Corporation (JKPCC) in 2014 had been submitted to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highway and approved in 2016.
The minister said Rs 17 crore shall be provided for its establishment.
“The Road Ministry released its first installment of Rs 1.5 crore in May 2017 for the execution of the work by the JKPCC,” said the minister.
The minister also said two-year time, starting September 2017, had been slated for proper training to the drivers of the commercial vehicles to save and avoid frequent road accidents in the hilly areas.
