Mercury drops to – 4.4°C in Srinagar City

The night temperature in the Kashmir valley has fallen several degrees below the freezing point while the days are unusually warm, rising to a high of a few degrees above the average.
The minimum temperature recorded overnight at most places in the Valley was four to six degrees below the freezing point, an official at Srinagar Meteorological Center said. In Srinagar, the overnight temperature had dropped to a low of -4.4°C, which was two degrees colder than the normal.
Gulmarg, a skiing resort in north Kashmir and a major attraction for tourists, recorded the low of minus 6°C on Monday night, the official said. Pahalgam registered the coldest night temperature in the Valley as mercury plummeted down to minus 6.6°C.
The frontier Kupwara town in north Kashmir recorded a low of minus 4.3°C and the gateway town of Qazigund in south Kashmir recorded a low of minus 4.6°C.
The temperature during recent days at most places in the Valley, including in the city, however, remained warmer than expected with mercury rising higher than normal.
In Srinagar, the day temperature on Monday was 11.2°C, which was 4.3 degrees higher than the normal of 6.9°C.
The maximum temperature in Qazigund was higher than normal by 3.5°C, Pahalgam was higher than normal by 3.1 degrees, Kupwara was higher by 5.4 degrees and Gulmarg was higher by 1.6 degrees.
