Christmas celebrations get going in Jammu city

Religious procession taken out; churches decked up for prayers

A colorful procession was taken out by the joint churches of Jammu and Christians to mark the Christmas celebrations in the city today.
The procession began from Residency Road church and passed through the main markets, including Raghunath Bazar, City Chowk, Raj Tilak Road, Rani Park, Kachi Chawni, Chowk Chabutra, Jain Bazar, Purani Mandi and Kanak Mandi.
People dressed as Santa Claus, angles, a chariot with King Herod and soldiers of the Roman cavalry were the special attractions of the procession. Senior priests of the churches of the Jammu region, who participated in the procession along with church members and choirs, performed the inauguration ceremony.
The main organisers of the procession were Rev Udhay Singh, priest of St Paul’s Church; Rev Shoukat Peter, president, joint churches of Jammu; Rev Issac Bhatti; Father Jose Vadakel of Catholic Church; and other religious and social bodies of the Christian community.
“We express our gratitude towards the district administration for extending help and cooperation. We wish a Merry Christmas to the people of the city,” said Jose Vadakel from the Catholic Church.
Meanwhile, churches across the city are being decked up ahead of Christmas. In recent years, not only Christians, but members of other communities also celebrate the day.
Moreover, special prayers are being organised at St Mary’s Garrison Church, Gandhi Nagar; St Paul Church, Residency Road; St Peter Church, Prem Nagar; Church of God, Dogra Hall; and Indian National Evangelical Church, Panjtirthi.
