JK seeks 254 more companies of forces: LS Bypolls

Terming militancy as a “big threat” to upcoming bypolls in Kashmir, security agencies have sought additional 250 companies of paramilitary forces to ensure “smooth conduct” of the polls to two parliamentary seats—Srinagar and Anantnag—slated to be held next month.
Even though the summer capital Srinagar has witnessed less militancy-related activities, top officials believe that the district continues to remain vulnerable as “threat perception” is always there.
Reliable sources said after a preliminary security assessment of Srinagar-Budgam constituency in Central Kashmir and Anantnag (Islamabad) constituency in South, it was decided to seek additional forces in two phases.
“Total requirement from the State to Centre is 254 additional companies. One company of paramilitary forces comprises of nearly 120 to 135 men. The request has been forwarded to the Centre and it is likely to be agreed upon,” a source privy to the development said.
He said south Kashmir, which has been declared as “most vulnerable” in terms of threat perception, would see a thick-cover of forces comprising police and paramilitary personnel. “Army would be also be deployed in the sensitive areas which include Pulwama, Tral, Kulgam and Shopian,” the source said.
J&K’s Director General of Police S P Vaid told Kashmir Post said that 54 additional companies of paramilitary forces will arrive in Kashmir ahead of polls (first week of April) while remaining 200 companies will be on duty on the poll days—April 9 and April 12.
“All the arrangements for the smooth conduct of polls will be done. Our special focus will remain on south Kashmir as it’s a sensitive region,” the DGP said.
He maintained that “militancy is a big threat. Rather it has always remained a threat.”
Inspector General of Central Reserve Police Force (Operations) Zulfikar Hassan, said: “Militancy is surely a major threat for polls. We are ready to face it. All the possible arrangements are in place to ensure incident-free polls for both the seats.”
The IG CRPF Srinagar (sector) said: “We have briefed our boys to stand guard and remain vigilant so that elections pass off peacefully. Peripheries of Ganderbal and Budgam district are under constant patrolling of our men. We are ready to face every challenge.”
Sources said among 250 additional companies of forces, there will be CRPF, SSB, ITBP and other forces.
“Nearly 88 youth, highest in six years, joining militant ranks in 2016 is a cause of concern for security agencies,” said a source.
A senior Army official posted in south Kashmir said the figures are really alarming. “The elections will definitely throw a challenge. As far the role of Army is concerned, we are ready to assist the State in ensuring smooth polls,” he said.
