‘Arbitrary’ checking of vehicles returns on highway, allege transporters

Transporters and commuters have alleged that arbitrary checking of vehicles returned on the Jammu-Srinagar highway stretch passing through Ramban following the reshuffle in Traffic department.
“Traffic cops posted on Jammu Srinagar National Highway especially in Ramban district are violating instructions and orders of the the department by taking advantage of absence of officers transferred in recent reshuffle” sources alleged.

They said that cops along with official vehicles can be seen after every ten Kilometers ‘waiting for their prey to extract money in the name of entry from the drivers plying on the highway’.
“Authorities had ordered that no vehicle would be put on check except at Lakhanpur and Jammu. But after recent reshuffle, the traffic cops are again resorting to past practices and frequently stop load carriers on one pretext or the other especially from Patnitop to Jawahar Tunnel” alleged a driver preferring not to be named.
Pertinently, after public outcry over alleged harassment by transporters and general public, Deputy Commissioner Ramban Mohammad Aijaz had also shot a letter vide his DO letter number DCR/PS/16/600-602 Dated 26-11-2016 to than IGP traffic informing about the issue.

Reacting sharply to the development, the drivers said “the illegal entry system has perhaps been institutionalized by the traffic police and the process is going on without any fear in broad day light routinely on the Highway”.
