244 Complaints against policemen in 1 Year

As many as 244 complaints were received by the J&K Police against its personnel from January 2015 to January 2016, the State Home Ministry headed by Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti disclosed in the Legislative Assembly.
In a written reply, the Chief Minister informed the House that 244 complaints were received against various ranks of police personnel posted in different wings of JK Police between January 1, 2015 to January 31,2016.

“All these complaints were sent for enquiries,” Mehbooba said, adding, “Action as warranted under rules was initiated/ being initiated against the police personnel found guilty.”
The Chief Minister also said the police have set up an internal mechanism to deal with the complaints keeping in view directions of the Apex Court.
On the Police Bill that was put in the cold storage during erstwhile NC-Cong rule, the Government disclosed that the Bill would be processed further for approval of the competent authority.

“In light of the directions of the Supreme Court given to all the State Governments in the case titled Prakash Singh versus Union of India and others, J&K Police Bill 2013 was prepared. The draft legislation was put in public domain and uploaded on the website of Home department,” the reply reads.
The Chief Minister also said suggestions have been obtained from different shades of opinion on the draft bill.
The draft Police Bill had evoked widespread criticism in 2013 with mainstream and human rights activists terming it as a “draconian” legislation.
The widespread resentment had prompted the then NC-Congress Government to put the proposed legislation on hold.
