Mass promotion proposal draws flak

Announcement about examination of lower classes soon: DSEK

The announcement of private schools association to grant provisional promotion for all classes up to 9th and 11th has drawn flak from various quarters with Director School Education Kashmir (DSEK) saying they will soon be making announcements about examination of lower classes.
“They (private schools association) can’t unilaterally pass any such order without getting prior approval from the school education department. This is in contravention of the laid norms. Such associations are formed only to act as mediators between private schools and government,” DSEK Aijaz Ahmad Bhat told Kashmir Post.
Private Schools Association Kashmir (PSAK) had yesterday announced provisional mass promotion to students’ upto class 9th and 11th in view of the prevailing turmoil in the Valley.
“We will soon make an announcement regarding examination of all lower classes. We will also initiate action against decision of private schools association to grant mass promotion to students,” Bhat said.
Un-aided Private Schools coordination committee also voiced their concern against the proposal
Press Secretary of J&K Un-aided Private Schools coordination committee Syed Akhtar Hussain told Kashmir Post they have decided to conduct examinations for all classes except 8th and 11th at a feasible time.
“This provisional promotion is detrimental for the career of students. We can’t set such precedents for our children. All students were already given mass promotion during 2014 floods and such things make students habitual and lethargic,” he said.
A teacher of a private school while criticizing the decision to grant mass promotion to students said, “This decision will add to the woes of the students. Under the provisional promotion, they will have to appear in exams later on and at that time they would be engrossed in syllabus of their new class.”
Commenting on the issue, Convener Parents Association of Privately Administered Schools Adil Amin said, “It is better if the exams are held instead of granting provisional promotion to the students.”
President of PSAK, GN Var, said they have only taken the decision about granting provisional promotion to students in the executive meeting yesterday. “However, before we implement it, we will take the directorate of school education on board.”
