Appear in exams now and avail 50% concession or face full-syllabus in March: Bizarre offer from BOSE

A day after announcing 50% syllabus relaxation in examinations for students of 10th and 12th classes, Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) Friday came up with a strange option offering students a choice to either appear in scheduled exams to be held this month or opt for full syllabus exams in March 2017.
As per the notification issued by Joint Secretary Exams, BOSE, there will be a separate examination in March 2017 for the students of class 10th and 12th, who are interested to appear with full syllabus.
“Such students, who are interested to appear with full syllabi, shall be provided an opportunity to appear in separate examinations to be held during March 2017 without any academic penalty,” reads the notification.
According to the BOSE official, even after announcement of open choice pattern offering relief to students, demand by some of them to hold exam in March 2017 has persisted.
“So the government has also taken a note of the divergent opinions expressed by students and suggested to the BOSE to review the issue in the best interest of the students and academic environment,” he said.
According to the BOSE notification, the offer is not applicable for students of Gurez, Tandghar and tehsil Keran and Machil. “The candidates belonging to Division Gurez, Tandghar and Tehsil Keran and Machil, both regular and private, shall not be eligible for the proposed March 2017 examinations”.
The notification further stated that the students would have to exercise their option only once and those opting to appear in this month’s annual regular examinations with open choice of questions as announced by the Board shall not be eligible to appear in the proposed the examinations be held in March 2017.
It stated that examination with open choice of questions will be conducted as per the date sheets already notified.
BOSE has already announced open choice in question papers for students of 10th and 12th classes appearing in November examinations in view of the disturbed conditions in the Valley.
“The decision to allow students to appear in annual exams in March 2017 with full syllabus has been taken in response to the feedback from the students, majority of whom want the examinations to be conducted as per the date sheet announced in September this year,” said a BOSE official.
The BOSE has announced examination schedule from November 14 for 12th class and November 15 for 10th class respectively.
Meanwhile, former KCCI President and noted businessman, Rouf Punjabi termed the decision of JKBOSE of conducting exams in March with 100 percent syllabus and November 14 with 50 percent syllabus as the new bargaining tool.
“Earlier, the government had made education a money-minting mine by allowing schools to seek massive donations at the time of admission of students and charging huge sums in the form of monthly and annual fees and by allowing tuition centres to operate while the same professors and lecturers would not teach in schools and colleges,” he said.
“Now this is the new bargaining business, which the government should have avoided by holding all exams in March as the four precious months of students have been wasted due to curfew, killings and pellet injuries,” added Punjabi.
