The Economic Reconstruction Agency (ERA) has demolished some dividers and traffic lights on the Canal Road to get the flyover work on track, which was halted due to repair work of the fourth bridge.
The ERA was unable to get cemented girders, which were being constructed at Bhagwati Nagar, after the closure of the bridge as it was the only route to transport cemented girders from Bhagwati Nagar to the flyover construction site.
Now to continue the work on the flyover which is about to miss its deadline of August 2016, the executing agency has demolished some portion of the dividers on Canal Road and traffic lights to make way for heavy-duty loaders carrying girders.
“The work was stuck due to traffic restrictions on the fourth bridge, but we cannot delay the project due to any reason. Now we have demolished some dividers and traffic lights on Canal Road so that our girders can reach the site from Bhagwati Nagar plant,” said Vinod Sharma, Chief Executive Officer, ERA.
“I hope our heavy-duty loaders will be able to turn near Canal Road and reach the site via Science College Road. We will stick to our deadline of December this year,” he added.
The work on the 1.3-kilometre long flyover, having four lanes, was started in May 2013 with the deadline of August 2016. The project includes widening of 1.5-kilometre road from six lanes to eight lanes and construction of two subways and four bus ways.
Later, the ERA had set December 2016 as the new deadline for completion of the Rs 95-crore project. The ERA has sublet the work to a private firm.
According to officials of the executing agency repairing the fourth bridge, it would take nearly 40 days for them to complete the work.
