Ragpickers get tips on segregation of waste material

The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) in association with a non-governmental organisation is training ragpickers for effective collection of segregated garbage.

Ragpickers get tips on segregation of waste material“The SMC in association with Chintan, an NGO involved in the betterment of environment through the solid waste management, has involved ragpickers assisted by the Municipal waste collectors for segregating waste at household level,” said an SMC official.

The official said trainers from Chintan had already started providing training to the local waste collectors and ragpickers for effective collection of segregated garbage from households.

He said it would help the corporation to cover “100 houses per hour”.

SMC Commissioner Showkat Ahmed Zargar, meanwhile, held a meeting with Asian Development Bank (ADB) representatives here today to discuss measures to be adopted for construction, management and maintenance of the third landfill site at Syedapora, Achan.

“The ADB representatives said waste segregation in municipal markets has to be imperatively taken up. They emphasised the waste collected has to be segregated into biodegradable and non biodegradable waste in at least in 50 municipal markets in the first instance and gradually taken to the rest of the municipal markets for improvisation of solid waste management,” said the SMC official.

Zargar said the SMC had already started the segregating waste and for this it had initially selected three wards — Lal chowk, Karan Nagar and Hyderpora.

He said the process of collecting segregated waste from households in these areas had already started.

“Material recovery facility in this regard has also been created at Achan where the waste material shall be taken to for further segregation and recycling for scientific disposal,” Zargar added.
